Trailer of the Week: Star Wars and More Star Wars

Trailer of the Week: Star Wars and More Star Wars

This is the week of Star Wars. Other trailers from across media were also revealed, but George Lucas’ space opera epic has a firm Force Choke on our attention and appreciation. This is thanks to two trailers for two huge projects: Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars Battlefront. Which, however, was the Trailer of the Week and, quite possibly, Trailer of the Year?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Official Teaser #2

At the time of this writing, this trailer has been viewed 32 million times, more than doubling the numbers from our first look at the brand new Star Wars film. It is easy to understand why. The devout legion of fans that waited and watched the Star Wars Celebration live panel lead to this great moment were instantly appeased and pushed the social awareness around The Force Awakens to an all time high.

It is a highly accomplished teaser, knowing its audience and the beats it has to hit for them to love it. The first panning shot of the Imperial class Star Destroyer buried in the sands of Jakku draws an electrifying parallel to A New Hope’s opening scene. Whatever happened here must have been truly momentous and destructive for such a powerful warship to be taken down.

The mysteries don’t end there.

Who is Luke referring to when he says “You have it, too” while speaking about the Force? Is it a member of his family? None of the new primary characters are of the Skywalker-Solo-Organa lineage, at least directly. Is that Darth Vader’s lightsaber being handed to a female character by a strange creature?

And then the words “This Christmas” come on screen.

The timing of the music and the cherry picking of the subsequent scenes is perfect. We get glimpses at Kylo Ren, the big new adversary. His visual design, interestingly enough, looks to have been partly inspired by Darth Revan, a fan favorite from the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic RPG.

A menacing new Star Destroyer floats overhead. TIE Fighters flash by, sporting a spiffy new paint job. The new heroes scrape through some harrowing encounters.

The Millennium Falcon zips into the engine nacelles of a long dead warship, a stubborn TIE Fighter pilot on its tail. The video goes black.

“Chewie. We’re home.”

Star Wars Battlefront Reveal Trailer

We’ve also been waiting for the next Battlefront for a while, though not quite as long as on the film side. The intention here is to show how faithful DICE are to the look of the original trilogy. Frostbite 3 flexes its muscles on the latest hardware, with extremely impressive visuals being pushed on the PlayStation 4.

As we still have E3 to look forward to, it is somewhat understandable that EA has chosen to wait to show us gameplay. It should be interesting to see how the 40 player battles are balanced over large maps with land and air combat present. I would have liked to see a few more details on how the game handles, especially since it has been teased for over two and a half years.

We are cautiously optimistic.

Trailer of the Week

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Official Teaser #2

Nothing comes close to the hope that I and countless other millions felt upon experiencing this tantalizing masterpiece. For the first time, we have a glimpse of a Star Wars trilogy that brings back so many of the characters that we already love alongside that unique mix of friendship, epic conflicts, and endearing humor.

Eyes watering. Goosebumps with goosebumps. This is the Trailer of the Week.
